Engine Cadet/Cadette instruction before ship board training

Engine Cadet/Cadette:

The most junior engineer officer on board the vessel in the engine department.

Training Book

All Engine Cadet / Cadette must have received the "Training Record Book for Engine Cadets ". The book is personal and important, and the trainee must get the Chief Engineer / Captain's signature on board all the vessels he / she serves with ship’s stamp.

The training outlined in the book should not be considered requisite; it should be accomplished to the greatest possible extent depending on the vessel's equipment, arrangement, cargo and speed. The Training Record Book (TRB) must be kept according to the directions described in the book and it must be presented at the Engine Department at the academy / college to which the trainee is admitted, in order to check whether the education has been completed according to these directions.

The Engine Cadet / Cadette must forward assignments, projects and evaluation scheme to the manning department according to the directions of the Training Record Book (TRB). Or thru e-mail address or equivalent.

When the Engine Cadet / Cadette has had 12 months of sailing time the entire book must be forwarded to the company's manning Training Department for control and verification.


Engine Cadet Familiarization 

The familiarization period shall be used by the candidate to familiarize himself with the ship, general safety and operational procedures. 

The Familiarization Should Include:

  • Cargo lining up.
  • Chief Engineer’s Standing Orders.
  • Ship's trading pattern.
  • Safety procedures.
  • Requirements regarding oil pollution prevention and garbage disposal.
  • Precautions on board the ship in general and in Engine Room in particular.
  • Internal communication.
  • General lay-out of the ship.
  • General house-keeping rules on board the ship.
  • Engine Room (ER) lay-out.
  • Electrical distribution.
  • Daily routine duties.


Engine Room Operation for Engine Cadet

After training period the Engine Cadet should be able to perform Third Engineer duties, responsibilities including independent watch in Engine Room.

During training period the Engine Cadet shall alternatively work under supervision of all Engine Officers including Electrician. He should actively participate / assist with their routine and special duties.

ENGINE CADET SHOULD FAMILIARIZE HIMSELF WITH:

Daily Routine Operation;

  • Operate Fresh Water Generator (FWG).
  • Operate auxiliary pumps.
  • Operate auxiliary Generator.
  • Operate arc welding machine
  • Operate / Simulate Oily Water Separator (OWS).
  • Manned Machinery space (MMS)
  • Fill in Engine Room (ER) Log book correctly.
  • Operate gas welding:
    • Argon Welding
    • Butane/Propane Welding
    • Hydrogen Welding
    • MAPP Gas Welding
    • MIG Welding
    • Oxy-Gasoline Welding
    • TIG Welding
  • Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) separators
  • Lube Oil (LO) separators 
  • Diesel Oil (DO) separators.

  • Operate incinerator.
  • Operate lathe machine.
  • Operate: 
    • Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) separators
    • Lube Oil (LO) separators 
    • Diesel Oil (DO) separators.
  • Unmanned Machinery Space (UMS)
  • Transfer of bilge water or Waste oil from one tank to another.
  • Synchronizes Generator manually and automatic.
  • Routine watches duties
  • Routine maintenance on various machinery.

Special Operations;


  • Operate Main Engine from Engine Control Room (ECR) position and Engine side position.
  • Operate Steering Gear (SG) in emergency mode.
  • Operate Auxiliary Boiler in manual mode.
  • Procedures and duties during cargo operation.
  • Operate Lifeboat engine
  • Davit type
  • Free fall release boat
  • Operate Man Overboard Boat (MOB) engine.
  • Operate and Launch life raft manually
  • Operate Inert Gas System (IGS).
  • Operate Emergency Fire Pump.
  • Operate Emergency Generator and power up Emergency Switch Board (ESB).
  • Operate Cargo Oil Pump Turbine (COPT)
  • Operate Cargo Oil Pump (FRAMO)
